Home of state capital Annapolis, the sailing capital of America, Anne Arundel County is where you can get your most striking impression of the beauty and the history that is the Chesapeake Bay. With more surviving colonial buildings than any place in America, Anne Arundel dates back to 1649 when it was founded by a group of Virginia Puritans seeking religious tolerance. It was given its name in 1650 in honor of England’s Lady Anne Arundell, wife of Cecil Calvert, second Baron of Baltimore, Ireland, and sister-in-law to Leonard Calvert, Maryland’s first proprietary governor. Anne Arundel Town became the capital city 45 years later and was renamed Annapolis in honor of Princess Anne, heiress to the English throne. But its history is just a quarter of the county’s charm that ends and starts with the majestic Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States. There are hundreds of coves, harbors, and tributaries to enjoy, and the sunsets and seascapes leave no one untouched. With 527 miles of enticing shoreline, the population of Anne Arundel County is projected to grow from 427,239 in 1990 to 540,000 in 2050.
